Snapchat shows small emoji next to a friend’s name that are automatic status badges (like 🔥 for a Snapstreak or 💛 for a #1 Best Friend), separate from any emoji you add yourself to your display name, like 🌸 Mia 🌸. This page explains both and gives 101 ready sets to copy.
What the emojis next to a Snapchat name mean
These emoji are assigned automatically by Snapchat based on your snapping activity with that friend — you cannot pick or remove them yourself. They appear next to a friend’s name in your chat list.
| Emoji | Meaning | How you get it |
|---|---|---|
| 🔥 | Snapstreak | Both of you have snapped each other within 24 hours, for several days in a row. |
| 💯 | 100-day streak | A Snapstreak that has lasted 100 days or more. |
| ⏳ | Streak about to end | Your Snapstreak has less than 4 hours left before it breaks. |
| 😊 | Best Friends | One of the friends you snap with most, but not your mutual #1. |
| 💛 | #1 Best Friends | You and this friend are each other’s #1 most-snapped friend. |
| 💕 | Super BFs | You’ve been mutual #1 Best Friends with each other for two weeks straight. |
| 😬 | Mutual Best Friend | You and this friend share the same #1 Best Friend. |
| 👶 | New friend | You just added this person or started snapping recently. |
| 🎂 | Birthday | Shows on their birthday, if they’ve added it to their profile. |
| ⭐ | Replayed | You replayed one of their snaps in the last 24 hours. |
Snapchat has changed these badges before, so treat this list as what’s documented and widely reported as of October 2026 — check your own app if something looks different. See our about page and editorial policy for how we build and check these pages.

Decorating your own Snapchat display name
Separate from the automatic badges above, Snapchat lets you set your own display name (Settings → your name at the top), which is different from your permanent username (the @handle used to add you). The display name takes most emoji and Unicode symbols; the username is limited to lowercase letters, numbers, periods, underscores, and hyphens.
Classic Unicode symbols like ♡ ✧ ★ sit in the Basic Multilingual Plane and count as 1 UTF-16 unit each; most color emoji need a surrogate pair, 2 UTF-16 units. The badge under every set below shows both counts — characters, then UTF-16 units.
Where a Snapchat name emoji actually shows up

| Bitmoji caption / Snap caption | Yes | No fixed limit published | Oct 2026 |
| Group chat name | Yes | No fixed limit published | Oct 2026 |

Questions people ask
What does the fire emoji mean next to a Snapchat name?
It means you have a Snapstreak with that friend — you’ve both sent each other a snap within 24 hours for several days in a row.
Why did my friend emoji change or disappear?
These badges update automatically based on recent snapping activity; if you stop being each other’s top friend, or a streak breaks, the emoji changes or goes away.
Can I add my own emoji next to my name on Snapchat?
Not next to your name in the friend list — those are automatic. You can add emoji to your display name itself (Settings → your name), which is what the sets on this page are for.
Does Snapchat limit how many emoji I can use in my display name?
We have not found an official published character limit for the display name field; the 32-character figure above is a widely observed value, not a documented one, so treat it as a starting point and check in your own account.
